Clueless is a 1995 American teen comedy film written and directed by Amy Heckerling. Starring Alicia Silverstone, with supporting performances from Stacey Dash, Brittany Murphy, and Paul Rudd (in his film debut), the film is a loose adaptation of Jane Austen’s 1815 novel Emma. The story follows Cher Horowitz, a beautiful, wealthy, and popular high school student who enjoys using her charm and privilege to orchestrate social schemes, from matchmaking her teachers to giving makeovers, all while navigating her own journey of self-discovery.
As Cher takes newcomer Tai Frasier under her wing, she attempts to steer her toward popularity and a suitable romantic interest—though her efforts don’t go as planned. Meanwhile, her relationship with her ex-stepbrother Josh evolves from playful teasing to deeper affection as she gradually realizes her own flaws and growing feelings for him. After a series of personal setbacks, including a failed driving test and a falling out with Tai, Cher undergoes a self-reflective transformation. She commits to becoming a more thoughtful and compassionate person, ultimately repairing her friendships, supporting a charitable cause, and embracing her feelings for Josh. The film concludes with a heartwarming resolution as relationships are mended, love blossoms, and Cher finds happiness in her newfound maturity.
